Prof. Yves Harder graduated from the Medical School of Basel in Switzerland in 1994, where he completed his training in General Surgery (FMH) and Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon (FMH). Thereafter, he spent almost two years at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Research at the University of Saarland in Homburg/Saar, Germany. During this research fellowship, he investigated various non-invasive strategies to prevent critically ischemic musculo-cutaneous tissue from necrosis. Subsequently, he went to Johannesburg, South Africa for a clinical fellowship in Reconstructive Surgery. From 2005, he worked as a consultant surgeon in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the Geneva University Hospitals, where he completed his postdoctoral lecture qualification entitled “Non-surgical preventive strategies aiming at avoiding critical ischemia in musculocutaneous flap tissue” in 2008.

From 2010, Prof. Harder has been working as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Handsurgery at the Klinikum rechts der Isar and as an Associate Professor at the Medical Faculty of the Technische Universität München in Munich, Germany, combining clinical work, teaching and research. In 2014, he was commissioned to build up from scratch the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in Lugano, Switzerland, where he has been working since then and collaborating with many other clinical specialties and the students from the newly founded faculty of biomedical sciences at the Università della Svizzera Italiana.

His main interests lie in reconstructive micro-surgery, particularly in the field of the breast and the lower extremities (lymphatic and orthoplastic surgery included) and aesthetic surgery of the breast. Prof. Harder is still active in basic research and teaching of pre- and graduated students and residents in training respectively. He is an author of more than 180 publications and book chapters, of which more than 130 are peer-reviewed. Furthermore, he is the co-editor of two textbooks entitled “Manual of Soft-Tissue Management in Orthopaedic Trauma” and “Modern Surgical Management of Chronic Lymphedema."
